INTRODUCTION & BACKGROUND:  WHY 1931-1945

Today's Anthropology Forum should be viewed as a 'bibliographic essay" dealing with the events leading up to the end of World War II and the signing of the "Instrument of Surrender" in Tokyo Bay, Japan, on September 2, 1945. Americans traditionally date the beginning of WWII from December 7, 1941 but in Europe WWII is considered to have begun on September 1, 1939 and in China, some date the beginning of WWII from July 7, 1937.  However, in my opinion (and the opinion of others), the date of September 18, 1931 should be viewed as the beginning of World War II: on that date the Japanese Kwantung Army (a separate army group of the Imperial Japanese Army) seized the city of Mukden, Manchuria, and what eventually became known as World War II began. In the 17th Century the Japanese gave the name "Manchuria" to the three provinces of China where the "Manchu" lived.  On September 4, 1951 (64 years ago tomorrow) talks commenced in California to officially end World War II and on September 8, 1951 representatives of 48 nations signed the "San Francisco Peace Treaty" which became effective on April 28, 1952.

I joined the faculty in August 1973 and this is my 40th public Forum presentation.  Prior to retiring in December 2009, I taught Peoples and Cultures of the Pacific, Cultural Anthropology, as well as History of Anthropological Thought.  My last Forum presentation was November 13, 2014, where I pointed out the pioneering research of Professor Emerita Valene Smith in the "Anthropology of Tourism" as well as my role as a lecturer on various Pacific cruises since 2004. Later this month my wife, Sadie, and I will be lecturing on the "Tales of the South Pacific" cruise for Holland America.  In February 2016 I am scheduled to be the Smithsonian Journeys Expert on a cruise of the Paul Gauguin through French Polynesia and in September 2016 we both will be lecturing on a Road Scholar cruise on the Le Soléal from Hawai'i to French Polynesia.

We began our Pacific travels in 1970 and I have been studying aspects of Pacific life for almost 50 years and have provided lectures on more than 30 cruises, placing destinations into context.  Sadie has also lectured on several of these cruises and our lectures complement one another.  Our presentations are a combination of experiencing situations first-hand as well as reading and researching and thinking about Pacific activities.

Selected visuals on this web page were shown at the Forum but the web page information primarily lists books mentioned on September 3, 2015 (and many books not mentioned). Please note the web page book titles are not in alphabetical order but in the order in which they were (partially) presented at the Anthropology Forum. For those interested in a "paper" on the the end of World War II, please see my 2005 Forum presentations (http://www.csuchico.edu/~curban/WorldWarIIEnds2005.html[World War II Ends!]), also referenced below.

NOTE: Of the many volumes listed on this current page, the following eight (in alphabetical order) are suggested for a "jumping off" point for, perhaps, a better understanding of World War II: Charles Glass, 2013, The Deserters: A Hidden History of World War II (Penguin), Fred Hargesheimer, 2005, The School That Fell From The Sky (www.BookstandPublishing.com), Jonathan W. Jordan, 2015, American Warlords: How Roosevelt's High Command Led America To Victory In World War II (Penguin), Maury Klein, 2013, A Call To Arms: Mobilizing America For World War II (NY: Bloomsbury Press), Allan R. Millett and Julian Thompson, 2012, WWII In 100 Objects: The Story Of The World's Greatest Conflict Told Through The Objects that Shaped It (NY: Metro Books), Kenneth D. Rose, 2008, Myth and the Greatest Generation: A Social History of Americans in World War II (NY: Routledge), Lawrence Verria & George Galdorissi, 2012, The Kissing Sailor: The Mystery Behind the Photo That Ended World War II (Annapolis, Maryland: Naval Intitute Press), and Arthur W. Wells, 1992, The Quack Corps (Chico, CA: DolArt Published).
